Trip to Masinagudi

Megha, Ram and Bhadra were suppose to come to our house this weekend (18-Aug-2018) but she called last Thursday to check whether we want to go to Masinagudi / Bandipur and our reply as usual was yes. So she quickly booked a place in Masinagudi.

Saturday, we woke up at 3:45 am and got ready and started from our house at 4:45 am. We reached Megha's house at 6:00 am. Ram told that they have bought some items to donate for Kerala flood. Btw it is scary there in Kerala and some part of Karnataka due to flood and land slides. I read in news paper that this kind of flood didn't have in last 100 years in Kerala. We were also worried if we can reach Masinagudi because we have to cross Kaveri river which too is flooded.

Anyway we 4.5 of us were ready and started from there place at 6:30 am with all relief material. I started to drive, Bhadra was with Ram and Megha and Runai were in back seat with relief material. We reached Kengeri and handed over the materials and started at 7:30 am from there. Our next stop was at mcdonalds in Mysore road for breakfast. Had breakfast, checked tyre pressure because it was behind a petrol pump and from there Ram started to drive. We crossed Mysore and was en route Bandipur and the trouble started. Because of Kaveri flooding, road was closed in Kabini area. We were asked to go through some village and some road which google doesn't know. But luckily all vehicles were moving in that direction and we followed them. Found out that 5 km drive in highway was 15 km now and took an hour. We were very hungry too. Runai took some biscuit from home which we all finished. Anyway we crossed that area and crossed Bandipur without sighting any animals except few spotted deer. Reached our place (Home Stay) in Masinagudi around 1:30 pm. The very first thing we asked Rakesh (owner of the place) "lunch please" which Megha already informed earlier to the owner about what we want to eat for lunch.

We were served lunch at 2:30 pm with rice, sambar, rasam, curd, pickle, poriyal and chicken fry. Food was simply awesome. We took some rest and also some photos. The place has some varity of birds. Around 4:30 pm we went to see a dam which is in 15th hair-pin bend in Ooty road. It is raining crazy here so mostly dam will be full and there are endless waterfall that we could see while driving. Once we reached the place we saw a waterfall with huge force coming down. There was a police check-post and the policeman told that the road is closed because they opened the dam and it is dangerous for anyone to go there. So we took a U turn and then on our way we took some photos of the waterfall and the valley and hills and returned back. We had some bajji and back to our place. Evening around 6:30 pm again we started to go towards Singara in a hope to see animals. We filled petrol which is the only petrol pump there. We went in for 5-10 km and couldn't find anything. Leave alone animals not even a single person. We saw some place that bamboos were broken, so thought we would see some elephants but none. The road was pitch dark in jungle and no lights with rain but road was very good, we thought to return back. We were back by 8:30 pm. In town we bought some banana and guava. Had our dinner where they cooked chapati, egg curry and veg curry which we requested them in afternoon.

Next Sunday we woke up around 5:30 am and got ready by 6:30 am and headed toward Bandipur in hope to see animals. It was raining heavily but we could see peacocks, Mommy elephants with its kid, variety of deer, wild boar and mongoose. We didn't go to Bandipur rather took a U-turn from Tamil Nadu checkpost and way back to hotel. We freshedup and again started and this time headed toward Moyar. On our way we again saw lots of peacock and one was about to fan out its feather due to I guess cloud or rain, but couldn't get good picture because it went inside jungle. We went till the dam and came back hotel. Around 10:30 am, we had puri with aloo masiyal. Then we took bath, packed our bags, paid hotel and started from there at 12:30 pm. I started to drive and this time we saw lots of animals in Bandipur. A full family of elephants and other animals. They old thing left was bison and tigers. Bison, we have seen in previous trip where they were grazing and tiger never ever. On our way back we were allowed to go through highway but very slowly in Kabini area. We could see that one side of the place was flooded. Shops, house, temples, lands everything were under water. Bridge in the road we crossed were about to be under water. But luckily we could pass the place and reached Mysore. We stopped there and had lunch. We started again from there at 3;30 pm and took Kanakpura road instead of Mysore road to avoid traffic. We reached Megha's house around 7:30 pm and Megha gave us a curry leaf plant and from there we took our car and reached home at 9:00 pm.

Trip to surprise Meggy at Mangalore

Its 26-Apr-2013, Runai and I are at KSRTC Bus Stand, Bangalore around 8:00 PM and our bus to Mangalore is at 10:09 PM. I have a meeting at 9:30 to 10:30 PM on same day, so I was wondering how do I handle this. Anyway I was equipped with Laptop, net connection headphone and other accessories. At 8:30 PM, I sent an email stating that I am in a situation where it will be difficult to attend the meeting. My manager was kind enough to let me skip the meeting and follow it in coming Monday. With that I was happy. Soon after at 9:00 PM, Ram comes and joins us. We board the bus at 9:45 PM and bus starts at 10:15 PM. Akshata joins us from Navrang Junction at 10:45 PM. We soon felt asleep and what we know is next day at Mangalore.

The trip is all about giving Megha a surprise in her house in Mangalore. She is in maternity leave with her parents. Its a secret except her husband Ram knows it from very beginning and her dad knows it just a day before and mom knows it same day, because she wants to cook delicious finger licking good food for us. BTW, Plingu or Plinguswari is about to join the Done Family soon.

Done Family
Its 27-Apr-2013, Ram woke up us hurriedly that we are in Mangalore bus stand and get down immediately, because bus will go further to Kundapura. We got down from the bus and saw that it was 5:30 AM. We come out of the bus stand her dad is waiting for us with his car. We get in and he drops us in the hotel which Akshi's uncle booked it for us. Its Hotel Veenu near Jothi Circle in Mangalore. Then her dad gives Akshi the direction about how to come to his house to give a life time surprise to Meggy. We parted from there, Ram went with his father-in-law and we 3 of us enter the hotel at 5:45 AM. Everything was closed, but security guard woke up everybody and we checked in. We 2 take a double bed and Akshi takes a single bed in 4th floor. From there we went straight to bed and slept till 8:00 AM and Akshi went for a morning run till Infosys and returns back which should be 10 KM. Anyway we leave the hotel at 9:30 AM and went straight to Woodland Hotel near Jothi Circle. We had Idli Vada and Rundai had plain dhosa. Food was awesome. We finished with coffee. The bill was Rs. 150. From there we got in a bus and got down in Urva Stores from where we had to go to Kodical Street. We walked for 1.3 KM down that street but obviously it felt like 3 KM and there we reached Meggy's house at 10:30 AM. She doesn't know anything yet. We get in and Ram saw us and asked us to follow him, we went right back to her and shouted. She was like super surprised. As quoted by Runai "i know this face... and that one, and that one too... but what are they doing here... someone pinch me i am hallucinating". Her grand mother was eating breakfast and was wondering what is going on. Then she started saying that she was feeling something is going on and thought that something is going to happen today but could not think anything like we are coming to her house. She was telling that her mom's food menu changed previous day and her dad was speaking over phone and suddenly he moved away from Meggy the previous day. Anyway now she knows why was all these happening. We later had second breakfast in her house. It was puri, veg mutton curry (It had no mutton, gravy was like mutton gravy and instead of mutton, steamed, fried flour rolls), sabji and fruits. Then we started all our gossip. After sometime Akshi and Ram went to sleep and we 3 continued. Now its time for lunch at 2:30 PM. We had fish biryani, raita, rice with veg curry and sabji and raita and pan cakes like stuff made with jackfruit and later dry fruits with rose ice cream from Pabbas. Her mom was non stop standing and cooking or doing some or other work from morning 6:00 AM till 2:00 PM. Hats off to aunty for her patience and filling our bhuka stomach. We took a quick nap and evening again we had sone papdi, sev and chai/ coffee. Later that day evening, we went to Tannirbhavi Beach.

Ram drove us there and parking fee was Rs. 20. He had some beautiful pictures and walk. Before returning we had 3 kala-khatta gola and 1 tangy mango paccari. Dinner was in one of the best place ever which was suggested by Akshi. It is known as Maharaja. Anybody in Mangalore should try here and specially sea food. We ordered for squid sukka, ghee roast jumbo crab, 2 fried seer fish, 1 squid masala and 1 prawn masala with summer cool and other drinks. The crab was so big and hard that we had to ask for cutter to crack it open. Meggy orders parcel for veg kolapuri and roti for her parents. Food was real good. Even her parent liked it very much. The bill was around Rs. 2600. From there we went walking and Ram and Megha went back to their house.

Its 28-Apr-2013, we got up and checked out the hotel around 9:30 AM. The bill was Rs. 3000. This time we did not have breakfast, because we don't want to make double breakfast. Same way like yesterday we went to Meggy's house at 10:00 AM. We all had breakfast together. We had puri, mango poori, alu sabji, raita and fruits. Today after some gossip, Runai, Akshata and I went to sleep. Ram was reading Freakonomics. Lunch time at 2:30 PM, we went for lunch. We had Beans sabzi, methi leaves sabzi, chapatis, chicken curry, rice, i-forget-the-name-of-the-gravy, raitha and banana pachadi and fresh woodapple/ berry. Later we started watching IPL matches and at 4:30 PM, we went to PABBAS.
Pabbas Ice Cream
I have never seen an ice cream parlor like this one. People stand in queue to get in. Its always houseful. Its bigger than any restaurant and ambiance is very good. It is value for money, serving quantity was good and on top of everything it was yummy. Every item was in between 45 to 60 except just one which is PABBAS special and it cost 120. We ordered for Porfait, 2 different chocolate flavors and 1 PABBAS special. For this special dish, they gave us a choice menu and asked us to tick of our choice 3 varieties of ice cream, what variety of topping we would like. Later we ordered for another chocolate choconut and 3 varieties of other ice creams for parcel. The bill was around Rs. 800. After that we droped Akshi to her uncle's place and we went and gave the ice cream to Meggy parents. We came back again to same junction and picked up Akshi and from there we went to Suratkal Beach.

There was a light house too. Akshi's brother studied in Suratkal college and she showed us Garuda Bar and Akshata Theater. After some walking and photo season in the beach, we returned back at 6:30 PM in Meggy house. We took bath and had dinner. We had rooti and egg masala and besi bella bath with potato chips and raita. At 8:45 PM we started from her house and within 10 min we were in Mangalore bus stand. Our bus to Bangalore at 9:15 PM we waiting in the bay. We boarded the bus and went to sleep.

Trip to Alleppey (Alappuzha)

Its 28-Sep-2012 8:30 PM, Nikhil and Runai reached Kalada G4 Bus Stop in Madiwala, Bangalore. We will visit Alleppey which is locally known as Alappuzha for a one day trip in boathouse. We are all very excited about it and wanted for a long time. Anyway I too joined them after 10 min and at 9:00 PM, Akshata joined us. It started to drizzle a bit. Our bus comes at 9:30 PM and we all board the bus. It was the last row in Volvo and my suggestion, never ever book last row in Volvo. Anyway bus started at 9:50 PM and they played a movie "Mallu Singh". Halfway through, we all were snoring.
Next day 29-Sep-2012, we got up at 6:00 AM, we just reached Chirangara (Megha's house). Finally we reached Oliviya Travels, Alleppey at 9:30 AM. Nikhil called up Mr. Tony (owner of our boathouse Angel Queen Houseboats). He told us to wait near his office at 11:00 AM. So we went straight to a restaurant. We had Appam, Idyappam, Parota, Veg Curry, Egg Curry and Chana Masala.
There comes Mr. Tony's uncle and at 11:00 AM, another person comes in and asked us to seat in a auto which will drop us near the boathouse. We did as prompted and when we reached the place, it was like hundreds of boathouse all anchored together. Ours were anchored far behind. So we had to hop from one boat to another to reach our boat.
Boat House Entrance

We were very excited once we were in our boat and went all around the boat. It had 2 bedroom, 1 kitchen, 1 dinning hall and 1 upper deck. It was just like a 2 BHK apartment. There were 3 persons. one for driving, 1 for cooking and another for helping. There were 2 ACs in bedroom and each had double bed. There were TV, dining table and sofa. I think they are competing with hotel rooms.
Alleppey Back Water

Alleppey Back Water

We started at 12:30 PM and hurray. We took bath and start headed toward the deck. For first one hour, it was very crowded with different houseboats. After an hour we were the only one in the middle of backwater. At 1:30 PM, the boat was anchored near a strip of land for lunch. It was one of the awesome preparation. There were rice, sambar, 2 veg dish, fish fry, pacheri, salad, curd, pickle and fruit.
Lunch

After we relished the food, we started thinking about dinner. We asked the person what he is going to prepare for dinner. He told fried rice and chicken. We were not too very kicked about the menu, so we requested him whether he can prepare some authentic malayali recipe. He was OK with it and asked us our suggestion. We told him if it can be same like lunch + chicken. He told it is fine and only thing is that there is no fish. So if we want, we can buy from nearby shop in between strip land. We were OK with that, so we started walking in that narrow strip of land for 5 min and there we reached the shop. They had Pomfret, Seer fish and Tiger prawn. Those prawns I have never seen in my life. The size was just like lobster. We asked our cook, what is comfortable with and he told us that if we want gravy, then we should take seer fish and if we want it fried, then we should take pomfret. Prawns is optional. Believe me, those fishes were not even 1 hour old from water. It was so very fresh. So we got 1 kg Pomfret for Rs. 700 which was just 4 pieces. The boatwala told us to wait near the shop. He will bring the boat here. We waited for the boat to come for 5 minutes. In the meantime, we got biscuits and chips from another shop nearby in that strip. Our boat came and we hoped in.
Resort

Next till 5 PM, we were all around water and in middle Nikhil was driving the boat for 15 min. The view was awesome and lot of picture happened.
Evening View

At 5 PM, boat was anchored and it seems boat owners house is next to the boat. We ordered for toddy (local malayali booze). It was ok ok. At 7:00 PM they fried those fishes and gave to us. At 8:30 PM thet served dinner. We sat on the deck and went to sleep at 2:00 AM. They kept the AC running, so room was nice and cozy.
Next day 30-Sep-2012, I got up at 8:00 AM and took bath. When I went to deck, I saw all others were already there. At 9:00 AM, we were served breakfast. Its idly, sambar and coffee.
At 10:00 AM, they started the boat and we went all around. At 12 o'clock, we came back to same place where we started. There we saw our boat owner was waiting there. The boat house experience was awesome. This was the first travel experience, where I did nothing other that relaxing, eating and talking.
Anyway we came to auto stand and took an auto to drop us in Oliviya for Rs. 35. we waited there for an hour, but the shop was closed. So Nikhil told us to go walking to nearby Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum and we will take an auto to bus stand to find a clock room and from there he will come to the museum.
The museum was a private property and entry charge is Rs. 100 per person. There are 2 persons who will take visitors in group as a guide. No photography allowed inside. I can't imagine how on earth a person can buy so many costly items from around the world and keep it in museum. One person rightly asked "Is it Revi Karuna Karan goes only to souvenir shops when visiting any places and nowhere else?". You get to see gold, silver, ivory and any kind of precious gems in bulk.
Anyway we came out of the place after burning our eyes and took an auto to go the beach. Our intention was not to sit in the beach because it was very very hot, but rather sit in a restaurant nearby and eat some sea food and get cooled by sea breeze. We got down near Coffee House and paid him Rs. 25. Don't go with the name. It sells chicken, mutton and everything except fish. So it did not meet our criteria, we went asking people where we can find a restaurant. There we are after walking for a km in that hot sun, we went to a restaurant, We ordered, 2 chicken biryani, prawn masala, 2 fish fry, 1 meal and beef fry. It was nice lunch and came out of the place at 2:30 PM.
We went straight to the beach and sat under a tree till 4:00 PM. Then we went to a nearby shop and ordered for 2 lime soda and 2 sarja (layered ice cream with fruits and nuts).
At 5:30 PM, we took another auto and back to main junction. There were 2 big shops for kerala chips. We got 1.5 kg of fresh banana and jackfruit chips for each person from Malabar Chips. We came back to Oliviya which was hardly 0.5 km away. Runai and Nikhil waited there and Akshata and Me went to get water and medicine for Nikhil. You won't belive, since it was Sunday evening, not a single shop was open. We went all around for 1/2 hour and found a medicine shop. We came back to Oliviya and at 6:50 our bus came to take us back in Bangalore.
We reached Bangalore 01-Oct-2012 at 6:30 PM and as usual it was Monday.

Trip to Chirangara

Its 20-April-2012, we DONE Family (Akshi, Ram, Meggy, Runai and I) boarded our bus from Madiwala, Bangalore 9:30 PM to go to Chirangara, Kerala. Thats were Meggy was born and thats where her house is. Bingo we are going to her house for the weekend.
We reached Chirangara on 21-April-2012 at 8:00 AM. Near the corner of the bus stop there was a tea shop. After sipping tea from there we walked for 10 minutes to reach Meggy's house. Her dad was cleaning the place. Nobody stays in that house. Her parents stays in Mangalore and she stays in Bangalore. The house was very beautiful. In a huge area, there is a nice yellow painted house.
Meggy House Chirangara

You name any spice or fruits, you will get that in her place. Few of us went to freshen up and her dad took us backyard to show all those plants. In the mean time, ladies gave their raw cashew nuts to her maid to roast it which they got it from Goa last week. After sometime, Meggy's cousin brother and uncle came. Around 9:30 AM, we all went to her cousin's house and locked her house. There they leave in a joint family. Mother, brothers, wives and children. Its a huge area. They manufacture pure herbal handmade body soaps and washing soaps. We had our breakfast (tummy full) and there outside cab was waiting for us for sight seeing. At 10:30 AM, we started. It was an ambassador, so huge space inside. We guys took front row and ladies back seat. Oh yes its very important. In Kerala you will sweat and sweat. So never forget to carry water as much as possible.
First we headed toward Kodanad Elephant Training Center which is approximately 40 KM from her house. In 1950-60s, Kodanad used to be the largest of several elephant training centres for captured Elephants from the adjoining forest regions. They were trained using Mahouts. In 1970s, there was a ban to elephant capture by Government of India and from then on, Kodanad is primarily used as a rescue training center. You get to see just born elephant to oldest fellow eating and eating. We were posing in front of one such old fellow who was busy eating. We spend 10 minutes there and suddenly that elephant threw whatever it had to us. I think it became angry because we were standing near it for a long time. Anyway we came out after that because it was the last one in that place.

We went to bank of Periyar River. Kodanad is in the bank of this river. There were very few people and we have enjoyed there for a long time. Meggy and Ram had one of there best photo there.

We came out of that place and then we went to the Mini Zoo adjacent to Kodanad elephant camp. It was small but well maintained. Deer, rabit, birds, snakes and peacock and peahen and yes lots of flowers.

We came out from there and headed back to the same place where we came from because from there we have take diversion to go to other places.
We halted in Orange Bakery. They shop is for bake items but they sell lunch too. We have ordered for what not and everything was yummy. we ordered for quail egg, roast duck, beef, rice, porota and juices.
Next we headed toward Athirapally Fall. It is again 40 KM from there. The road was beautiful and everywhere you will see rubber tree plantation. We reached the fall around 2:30 PM. we had nice time there. The weather was pleasant, so rocky platform was not hot.

On they way back we went to Chalakudy River bridge. It was a nice straight bridge. We went down the stairs to the river but saw that there was no place to seat. So we went to the other side of the river. We spend lots of time there relaxing. I felt asleep for an hour too. Akshi filled a bottle with the cool water from that river.

When we reached back to the junction where there is Orange Bakery (I don't remember the place name), we went to nearby chips and condiments store and got packets of banana, jackfruit and many other varieties of chips.
We came back home and freshen up and went to Chirangara temple. The best part was yearly ceremony was going on for temple. There were group of people who was continuously playing music with traditional instrument for hours. Then the temple elephant was brought in and he was being decorated. In the mean time we went inside the temple. Every guys has to open their shirts inside the temple. Then we came out and outside Meggy's cousin brother was waiting for us. Ram and I went in his car and in different shops to get the best item from that shop. When we came back to the temple, girls were watching theater which was performed in nearby stage in temple premises. They all came out from there and we went to Meggy's house and parked ourselves. We finished dinner and because it was little too much in quantity, we could not finish it. At night we finished water, so we drank water from the one that Akshi filled from Chalakudy river.

22-April-2012, we got up late. Anyway after freshen up, we went straight to Meggy's cousin's house. Breakfast was a royal spread. We had idli in jackfruit leaf, and many other dishes which is first time for me. All were yummy. Then we played with kids, chat with brothers. We went around their factory and saw how handmade soap is made with all natural elements.
We went back to Meggy's house. We wanted to go for a walk in nearby fields and villages. This is more because we want to make us hungry again because gala lunch is getting prepared for us. We took 2 bottles of water and went wherever we wanted.
We went back to to cousin's house around 4:00 PM and had lunch. So nice of them, that they were waiting for us. We had fish, chicken, pork and some veggies with rice. Then they gave us each many packets of soap "Yogi Soap", and washing powder. Believe me, once you get used to those soap, you cannot use any commercial soaps. We came back to Meggy's house around 7:00 PM and packed our belongings and her cousin brother came with his car to drop us in bus stop. We reahced the bus stop at 9:30 PM and bus came at 10:00 PM. Next morning 23-April-2012 Monday, we are back to Bangalore and we got down in Silk Board.

Bangalore Food Street

We are in Meggy's house in Ejipura, Bangalore on 25-Feb-2012. Meggy has given us a very well documented map to reach her house from Sony World Junction, Koramangala. We (i.e. Meggy, Ram, Runai, Akshi and I) were at her home. After some chit&chat and TV, we started discussing where should we go tonight. It was Meggy's idea that we will go to Food Street in VV Puram / Sajjan Rao Circle in Bangalore. Then the discussion went in how to go? Whether it will be in Akshi's car or 2 two-wheelers and a auto. Later it was decided that it is just going to be double and triple in 2 two-wheelers. Ram and I were in my bike and Meggy, Runai and Akshi in Meggy's Activa.
We started around 7 PM and the first traffic signal was in Neelasandra junction. Ram and I suddenly saw that Akshi got down from bike and started running. Oh yes, Akshi is good in running and she participate in Bangalore Marathon race. We had no idea why she was doing that. Later we found that trippels are not allowed in bike. So she is going to get down in every traffic signal and start running and then wait for us crossing the signal. Sometimes it happened that the signal was so long that she crossed 2 signal at a time and waited for us. I don't know how she did it but she did it for nearly 12 KM. Anyway after asking here and there, we have reached the place and parked our bike at 8:00 PM.
It was a very busy road and people were all around. It is approximately 1 km streach and it has nearly 50 food shop with more than 5k people. There was no place to stand, it was that crazy crowded. Its a pure veg street. The food store will provide food in plate and you have to make your own place somewhere and stand and eat. It was nice fun there. You can get idli, dosa, akki rotti, bele obbattu, corn, puliyogere, bonda , bajji, benne gulkan, beLe masala, masala pepsi, masala soda, vada pow, pow bhaji, paneer roll, romali roti, gobi manchurian, paneer masala, chat ... u name it they have it. All at a very reasonable price ...
We started with masala corn with mango. It was something different which we never tasted before. After that we promptly went to south indian store where it was very busy. With lots of struggle in the cash counter, we paid for 2 different types of dhosa and akki roti. It was very tasty and nice hot food. Good thing this is that they use nandini ghee and quality is good and they make everything as and when ordered. Then we went chat store and ordered for sev puri, dahi puri, gelabi and rasa malai. Meggy went to get bele obbattu. Every plate was very tasty. Later we again went for another plate of bele gelabi. Next was gulkan store. It was really really nice. There was this rose chutney type with lots of fruits and ice cream. Then we got a bottel of water and end of our dinner. For 5 people, the total bill was around Rs. 320.
Ram and I
Runai, Akshi and Meggy
Then we wanted to take tea but since it was 9:30 PM, we did not get tea anywhere there. Then we found a guy selling masks. That was the next fun we had and then we started to come back home and Akshi did the same hoping in every signal. Somewhere in middle police stopped us for breath analyzer and from nowhere Akshi was running in front of him at that late night. The police would have thought that one thief is escaping :-) Anyway with everything we reached Meggy's house arround 11 and with all chit chat we slept at 3:30 AM next Sunday.
