Trip to South Goa

Its 10-April-2013, we are on our way to Goa, precisely Agonda, South Goa. We are waiting for our bus at Madiwala, Bangalore which was suppose to depart at 6:00 PM. But it turned out that a pickup bus will take us to Gandhi Nagar, Bangalore and from there bus to Goa will depart at 8:00 PM. With everything our bus started at 8:45 PM. On the was the bus stopped around 11:00 PM for dinner. We had meals and dhosa and vada and again back on our track. At night I don't know where we stopped and what it did, because it was a AC sleeper coach and I was enjoying my sleep.

11-Apr-2013, I got up at morning 7:00 PM and saw that we are in Karwar, Karnataka. It took us another 40 min to reach Canacona, Goa. By 8:00 PM we were in the bus stop. We took a local bus and reached Agonda church which is approx 10 km and bus ticket was 13 Rs. per head. This is Agonda.

From there it was 1 1/2 km walking to our Chettai Beach Huts.

The road was straight parallel to Arabian Seashore. In between the road and the beach was endless beach huts by different enterprises. On our way most of the shops were closed except one, where we had egg-toast and banana pan cakes. We also rented a scooty for 3 days from there for 200 Rs each day. Around 11:00 PM we went to our hut and checked in. These huts are on the beach and the restaurant is facing the sea. It is a nice quite place with hardly anybody seen around. We freshen up and went to the restaurant for pineapple and orange juice. Next we started our scooty. First thing first, we found a local shop who sells petrol and took 75 Rs. for a litre. Then we searched for a petrol bunk and found in NH 17 which is around 6 km away. The price was 55.95 Rs. per litre where in Bangalore it is 77 Rs. per litre. From there we went straight to Cabo de rama fort which was toward 20 km north.
Cabo De Rama Fort

It is a nice fort on the seashore on top a hill. But it is not maintained well. Anyway after some photo shots, we returned back. Road was excellent and nobody to be seen around. Its like the entire road is mine. Both side of the road was cashew tree garden and huge number of cashews were fallen in the street. We stopped every places and picked up cashew. On our way we stopped to Shree Gramdev Laxminarayn Temple at Shiroti Khola.
Shree Gramdev Laxminarayn Temple

We crossed Agonda and went toward Palolem beach.
Palolem Beach

There we stayed for an hour. It was a very busy place with lots of shops around with lot of people. We had our lunch there with rice and fish curry. When we returned back to Agonda, we were running out of petrol, so again back to same petrol bunk and thins time filled the tank. Next to the bunk, we a shop, where we picked up 3 beers. Guess what is the price. It is 55 Rs, where in Bangalore same one cost 90 Rs. we also had samosa and back to our hut. It was around 5:00 PM by then and we started feeling hungry. None were open to eat something, so got some chips and snacks for the evening. We asked the hotel stuff, what do they have fresh for tonight? They brought a full red snapper and another fish. We asked them to prepare a tandoori for the red snapper which they told that it will be 800 Rs. By evening we were enjoying the sea seating on the hut roof top varanda. We were served the fish around 9:00 PM with beautiful decoration. The fish and tandoori preparation was so yummy, we ordered for chicken tandoori and glass of port wine. By now we were sitting in the restaurant and enjoying the night sea breeze with the food all alone. Around 11:30 PM we went back to our hut and that was end of the day.

12-Apr-2013, we woke up at 7:00 AM and after freshen up, we wanted to try other restaurant, so went to nearby place just few properties ahead. We tried cheese omelet, mushroom omelet with Goan paw and coffee. After an hour, we came back to our hut and drove straight to Cola beach.
Cola Beach
The beach was big enough but just one hut resort and rest is surrounded by hills. There is a big lagoon attached to the beach. The road to the beach was not good and only one narrow passage to enter the beach. We spend an hour there and continued same road toward the fort. We passed that and went ahead toward Margao. After some time when we felt that we will run out of petrol, we had to return back. Road was beautiful, nobody around and both side of the road was covered with cashew tree. Cashew fruits fallen all around and you can smell feeni all around. When we returned back to our hut, we were hungry, so went to nearby restaurant and had rice and chicken tikka masala. It was ok ok and we ordered the least. Actually when we went in, we thought it won't be nice. But since we went in, we ordered just a plate for two of us. Then we went back to our restaurant and ordered for Goad fish curry and rice. We slept for sometime and in the evening, we went walking in the beach toward the nearest end from our hut. Basically each beaches in Goa are surrounded by hills on both side. So we have plenty of beaches, some too small and some lengthy ones. This side of the beach too had lagoon and it seems tortoise comes and lays egg there and then return back to sea. It is the duty of forest department to collect those eggs and place it properly. Night we had pomflet fry, prawn curry and rice.

Its 13-Apr-2013, we woke up at 8:00 AM, freshen up and went to the restaurant for eggs, goan paw and coffee. Next we know that we are in our scooty heading toward Patnem beach. Its same like Palolem beach. Next we went to Rajbag beach.
Rajbag Beach

It is same like small version of Agonda beach with practically nobody and nothing is available except a huge posh resort. Next drove back and came to Chau Rasta junction and headed toward Canacona junction. On our way to Sanctuary, we went to Shri Mallikarjuna Devasthanam.
Shri Mallikarjuna Devasthanam

It was very beautiful and well decorated temple.Next we went to Shri Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math.
Shri Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math

It is not a temple rather a place for religious people. Next was Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary.
Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary Bull Skull
Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary Deer
Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary Road

Its a huge sanctuary. Supposedly there are black panther and other wild lives, which we are scared of face to face contact with our scooty to escape, we did not wanted to go deep inside the forest. We paid 70 Rs and went to the zoo and museum. The lady in the reception has deadly memory. She saw Runai last year and she remember her as soon she saw her this year and was wondering who am I because she did not see me last year. From there we returned back and took a diversion to go to Shri Mohini Devasthanam which is in Sadolxem.
Shri Mohini Devasthanam

The road was awesome. It goes parallel with a river. From there we came back to Canacona bus stand which is called as Kadamba bus stand and had lunch in the canteen. After that we went back to same petrol bunk to fill the tank and bought beer and Mangalore bun which was new for me. We returned back from there and back to Agonda where we went to Shree Agondeshwer Temple.
Agondasweri Temple

Next back to our hut. After freshen up, we went and returned the scooty back to the owner. Walked down to the hut and started walking in the beach till the other further end of the beach where local people usually go. It took us 2 hours to go and come back to our hotel. Evening we ordered for Tandoori chicken, which we had with Mangalore bun. It was so yummy, we ordered another plate of Tandoori chicken. Around 10:00 PM, Yougesh came to confirm that tomorrow morning we will go for Dolphin Ride. We went to bed around 11:30 PM.

Its 14-Apr-2013, we woke up at 6:30 AM and got ready by 7:00 AM for Dolphin Ride. We waited for Yogesh to come. Since he was delaying, I took my camera and started taking picture of our hut, restaurant and sea beach from various angles. There was nobody around, except Anil who manages this property. As I came near to the main gate, I saw Yogesh driving down the street. He told me to come. Just as then, Anil came back to me and gave his scooty to drive down to the end of the beach, where all boats are there. Runai and me followed him and we drove down to the end which is open for public and nearly 2 km away and after that it is place for boats and fishermen. It was a medium size motor boat kept at the top of the seashore. Yogesh asked if we can help them to bring the boat down to water. We were ok with that and it is our first time to see how it is done and to do it too. It was a slope, but that doesn't do any help to pull it down in water. They keep plank of wood and apply some greasy oil over it, so that boat can slide down. So every 10 feet, they stop and bring the planks from behind the boat and keep it in front. It took 20 min to do that for hardly few meters and finally boat is in water. We jumped in the boat. We did not carry anything except money. Camera would have been spoiled because there is water everywhere and we have a SLR which is bulky. We started our boat ride at 7:45 AM. Yogesh was handling the motor and his dad was standing in the fornt and guiding him and we 2 seating in opposite direction in the middle of the boat. First we went to Honeymoon beach which is a small beach in between two hills totally untouched. Next we went to Butterfly beach which too was small but very deep. These two beaches were nearby and just beside the hill one after the other. Next we went for Dolphin. We went far away from the beach and went back of a huge fishing boat. There we saw Dolphins jumping in the water. Those Dolphins were so close to our boat. They jump out of the water and again goes in to breath and they normally stay behind the fishing boat, so that they can eat fish. We stayed in the middle of the Arabian sea for 20 min and then had to returned back, because that fishing boat went further away and our boat cannot go any further because marine police will catch us. We returned back and this time we had to pull the boat up and this is more difficult. So another fisherman came by and helped us. We paid them 1500 Rs. and took the same scooty and drove down to our hut at 9:00 AM. We freshen up and went straight to the the restaurant and ordered omelets, toast and coffee. In the mean time I asked the manager, if we can stay for some hours extra because we are suppose to check out at 11:00 AM that day. He was ok and told that we can stay till 4:00 PM, since our returning bus was at 6:00 PM, provided there is no emergency. By then food was served and it was not enough for me, so I ordered for 2 alu paratha. There were nobody in the restaurant that time and we got our food immediately. Those paratha was huge, but somehow we finished it and went inside the hut to take some rest. We packed and did nothing till 1:00 PM, then we came out and sat in the restaurant again and ordered for lime juice. At 3:30 PM, we paid a bill of 6000 Rs. and asked Anthony if he can arrange for an auto to Canacona bus stop? He did and at 4:00 PM, auto came to drop us to the bus stop. We were so happy with their service and care and later we found that they also liked our behavior, we gave a tip of 1000 Rs. which I asked them to share among 3 of them (Anthony - attendent + Subash - chef + Anil - manager when the real manager is not there). We went and waited in the bus stop from 4:30 PM. The bus was suppose to come at 6:45 PM, but as usual showed up only at 7:15 PM. We had veg biryani and chilly gobi at 10:30 PM and back to sleep in same AC Sleeper coach.

15-Apr-2013, at 7:30 AM, we are back in Gandhi Nagar, Bangalore. Took an auto from Ananth Rao circle till our house for 200 Rs, which dropped us home at 8:15 PM.

Trip to Hampi

Note:
1. Hampi which is basically Vijyanagar Dynasty is now can be seen as ruins. It is one of the most beautiful place just with the ruins.
2. It is a rocky hilly terrain on all 3 sides and soothing river on other side. So visiting this place in winter season is better. I tell you when Bangalore is 22 C, here it is 35 C.
3. If there are 100 visitors, then just 5 are Indians and rest 95 are from various part of the world.
4. This village will consists of max 200 houses and out of that 150 are also guest houses. I really don't know where the family members are going to stay and here they are going to accommodate their guest. I just found 3 hotels though named as guest house.
5. There are no or very few eating place. Out of those 200 houses, there may be max 20 places to eat. Most of them will cater to foreign food, like bread, pizza, burger and similar stuff. I found one
road side stall selling dhosa and one proper shop selling south Indian dishes. It was really funny to see cattle staying in one side of the house and in another side people are selling pizza and burger and on your way you will be greeted by cows.
6. There are no metal road inside the village, it is just mud road as we see in any other villages. I think this helped the place to retain its beauty.
7. There are n numbers of bicycle and bike renting shops. Bike is basically TVS 50. It is Rs. 200 per day + petrol is Rs. 95 per litre from them. It will look new, but will not be able to pull you in up hill.
8. There is no doctor and no medicine shop. No ATM, no petrol bunk and no cell phone tower. I guess that's why this place is so well maintained and away from commercialization.
9. There are no hi-fi places if you are planning to just come and relax. It is a place where you get min essentials in best way in competitive price.

I WOULD LIKE TO TELL THAT KING SRI KRISHNA DEVARAYA WAS REALLY A GOOD KING. REASON BEING IN HIS TIME HIS DYNASTY FLOURISHED AND AFTER HIS DEATH i.e. 500 YEARS DOWN THE LINE, VILLAGERS ARE STILL EARNING FROM FOREIGNERS FOR RUINED STRUCTURE DEVELOPED IN HIS TIME.

It's 18-Jan-2013. We are in Bangalore KBS waiting for our bus to Hampi. At 10:45 pm we board our bus and at Il:10 pm we left Bangalore. We felt asleep once our bus started moving.

Next day 19-Jan-2013, I woke up at 6:30 am and we are in Hospet. It was another 11km from here to reach Hampi. We reached Hampi at 7:45am and it was middle of nowhere. There was absolutely nothing except ruin architecture / structure / premises. There were no bus stop or anything. Straight ahead of us were Virupaksha Temple.
Hampi Bazar Road

We saw that few of the guys in our bus started walking straight. In the meantime Runai baught 2 guide books for Rs. 110. Then we 2 started following others and started going straight. Just as we walked few meters there were a mud road to our right. And there we saw lots and lots of guest houses. And as we started exploring all these mud lanes and we came across multiple guest houses. Basically these guesthouses are part of local peoples house which will be rented to tourist. Here tourists are mainly foreigners. we are very few Indians staying here. And also in our bus, if there were 15 passenger who got down in Hamp, it was 3 Indians and rest were foreigners. I had a feeling that these foreigner stay here for days after days. We inquired few such guesthouses and everybody told us that there are no rooms available. Later we found Vickey's guesthouse and they told that rent is Rs. 800 and check in time in 9:30 am. As it was 8:00 am, we were asked to sit in roof top restaurant and have breakfast and in the meantime room will be cleaned and given to us. We had egg sandwich and coffee. We noticed that we were the only Indians siting there. It was nice to hear people talking in different language. Anyway it was 9:00 am, so we told the reception that we will go to Virupaksha Temple and come back here.

Virupaksha Temple

Virupaksha Temple

Virupaksha Temple

Virupaksha Temple
The temple is the nearest and oldest in Hampi. It is very tall building and can be seen from any part of Hampi. We went inside. To our left there is a hall supported by 1000 rock pillars and in the middle there is a canal through which water of the River Tungabhadra flows.
Tungabhadra River

Later we had to keep our shoes outside and get ticket for Rs. 2 per adult and Rs. 50 for camera. The temple in front of the gate is that of Lord Virupaksha. To your right there is a way which goes directly to the river. It is a very beautiful temple and one must see it. Mind you there are too many monkeys inside the temple premises. We have seen infrnt of us that group of monkeys snatched a purse from a lady infrnt of us and took out everything from there. They threw each one wherever they felt like and one of them took her mobile and dissected everything part by part and threw it in every direction from roof top. At 10:00 am, we came back and checked in our hotel. We were ready by 11:00 am and ready for our trip to Hampi. Geared with camera, Samsung 800 for direction, tour guide book, sun glass and hat, we rented a bike. We went straight to police station and asked one of them where can we park. He was very humble and acted like human and not like some big city police man and showed us some place behind a sitting place made with huge rock by the king in his time. From there we climbed up and meet with Monolithic Bull.
Monolithic Bull

It is a rock carved huge bull placed in between a elevated platform and on top roof supported by 4 rock pillars. Next we went further up and found a small temple.
Rocky Bolder

Next we had to get down the hill to find a magnificent temple. It is Achyutaraya Temple.

Its huge and beautiful. One must visit this temple. We came back whrre we parked our bike and there was a road to our right which goes to Mathanga Hills. I asked Runai that we will go to hills later and we will explore other places. She was ok with the plan, so we started our bike. There was another mud road toward our right while going back and we went there. We had to park our bike under a tree and it was bank of the river. We walked for sometime in those rocks or under the bolder to reach many temples like Inscribed Vishnu Temple,

King's Balance, Purandara Mantapa and many others. Some were on top hills or bolders or some were in river banks.

It is an awesome magnificiant temple and is a must visit for everybody. You will also get to see chariot made with rocks. We next went to river bank and saw Chandramauleshwara Temple right in the water supported by rock pillars. Beside that was the old bridge which is only left with rock pillars. It was very hot by now, so baught a bottle of water and came back to where we parked our bike. We
went straight to where buses are parked. We were hungry by now and went to a stall for lunch. Next was Krishna Temple

Opposite To Krishna Temple

again wonderful and a must visit by everybody. Opposite the temple was open ground and further inside there was a pond surrounded by rock pillars. Next drove down to Kamalapura which is approx 4 km. We found a ATM and got our cash. Next we went further down to Pattaabhirama Temple. It was closed, so could get few pictures from outside. Next we headed backward and in midway there is this Archaeological Department's Museum. Entry ticket is Rs. 10 per adult. This ticket is also valid in Lotus Mahal. No camera allowed inside. There are 4 gallery each has its specific category and in the center is a model of Vijaynagara Dynasty and location point of various structures. We went back to the same road we came from and headed toward royal enclosure. Its a huge area consist of various structures. First we went to
Chandrasekhara Temple.
Chandrasekhara Temple

This temple is well maintained and quite big. Then we went to Octagonal Bath.

Octagonal Bath
Next was Sarasvathi Temple. Then we went further up in bike and then walking to get a magnificent view of Hampi. We also took a panoramic picture of the place tagged with GPS location. Later we came down and joined the main road. Next was Queen's Bath. Its a enclosed place and in between is the pond and everything is made out of rocks. To me it looked like Mugal architecture. Next we went to Royal Enclosure which is the heart of the dynasty. Next was Mahanavami Dibba which is a very high rise platform.
Mahanavami Dibba

It is so high that you get a very good panoramic view of all direction. Next was Kings Audience Hall. Beside that was Underground Shrine Chamber. Opposite to the road was Hazararama Temple.

It was very beautiful and well maintained. Temple was carved with full version of Ramayana. Opposite to this was Pan-Supari Bazar which was supposed to be flourishing bazar at the time Vijaynagara dynasty. From there we returned back to main street because it was 4:30 pm and we were supposed to return the bike at 6:00 pm. We went to few small temples or ruins. Many we did not stop and few we did stop. One was Sri Uddana Veerabhadra Swamy Temple and Chandikeshwara Temple. We came back to Virupaksha Temple. It was 5:15 pm, so went to Hemakuta Hill which consist of 3 temples. The first big one was Kadlekalu Ganesh.
Kadlekalu Ganesh

There are other 2 which are on top of the hill and looked very resent ones. After this our trip for the day was over and we handed over the bike. The we walked back to the river bank and sat there for half an hour. Next we walked further to the small jetty which has 2 small boats. Then we walked further down and when it was dark, we came back and searched for some south Indian place for dinner. We didn't get one, so went to a small shop to get fried rice and gobi. It was nice and hot. With that our day was done.
Next day 20-Jan-2013 was relaxing and didn't do much other than eating and sleeping and writing this blog. At 7:15 PM checked out from hotel and boarded our bus which left sharply at 8:00 PM and dropped us to Bangalore on 21-Jan-2013 4:45 AM.

Trip to Alleppey (Alappuzha)

Its 28-Sep-2012 8:30 PM, Nikhil and Runai reached Kalada G4 Bus Stop in Madiwala, Bangalore. We will visit Alleppey which is locally known as Alappuzha for a one day trip in boathouse. We are all very excited about it and wanted for a long time. Anyway I too joined them after 10 min and at 9:00 PM, Akshata joined us. It started to drizzle a bit. Our bus comes at 9:30 PM and we all board the bus. It was the last row in Volvo and my suggestion, never ever book last row in Volvo. Anyway bus started at 9:50 PM and they played a movie "Mallu Singh". Halfway through, we all were snoring.
Next day 29-Sep-2012, we got up at 6:00 AM, we just reached Chirangara (Megha's house). Finally we reached Oliviya Travels, Alleppey at 9:30 AM. Nikhil called up Mr. Tony (owner of our boathouse Angel Queen Houseboats). He told us to wait near his office at 11:00 AM. So we went straight to a restaurant. We had Appam, Idyappam, Parota, Veg Curry, Egg Curry and Chana Masala.
There comes Mr. Tony's uncle and at 11:00 AM, another person comes in and asked us to seat in a auto which will drop us near the boathouse. We did as prompted and when we reached the place, it was like hundreds of boathouse all anchored together. Ours were anchored far behind. So we had to hop from one boat to another to reach our boat.
Boat House Entrance

We were very excited once we were in our boat and went all around the boat. It had 2 bedroom, 1 kitchen, 1 dinning hall and 1 upper deck. It was just like a 2 BHK apartment. There were 3 persons. one for driving, 1 for cooking and another for helping. There were 2 ACs in bedroom and each had double bed. There were TV, dining table and sofa. I think they are competing with hotel rooms.
Alleppey Back Water

Other Hose Boat

Alleppey Back Water

We started at 12:30 PM and hurray. We took bath and start headed toward the deck. For first one hour, it was very crowded with different houseboats. After an hour we were the only one in the middle of backwater. At 1:30 PM, the boat was anchored near a strip of land for lunch. It was one of the awesome preparation. There were rice, sambar, 2 veg dish, fish fry, pacheri, salad, curd, pickle and fruit.
Lunch

After we relished the food, we started thinking about dinner. We asked the person what he is going to prepare for dinner. He told fried rice and chicken. We were not too very kicked about the menu, so we requested him whether he can prepare some authentic malayali recipe. He was OK with it and asked us our suggestion. We told him if it can be same like lunch + chicken. He told it is fine and only thing is that there is no fish. So if we want, we can buy from nearby shop in between strip land. We were OK with that, so we started walking in that narrow strip of land for 5 min and there we reached the shop. They had Pomfret, Seer fish and Tiger prawn. Those prawns I have never seen in my life. The size was just like lobster. We asked our cook, what is comfortable with and he told us that if we want gravy, then we should take seer fish and if we want it fried, then we should take pomfret. Prawns is optional. Believe me, those fishes were not even 1 hour old from water. It was so very fresh. So we got 1 kg Pomfret for Rs. 700 which was just 4 pieces. The boatwala told us to wait near the shop. He will bring the boat here. We waited for the boat to come for 5 minutes. In the meantime, we got biscuits and chips from another shop nearby in that strip. Our boat came and we hoped in.
Resort

Next till 5 PM, we were all around water and in middle Nikhil was driving the boat for 15 min. The view was awesome and lot of picture happened.
Evening View

At 5 PM, boat was anchored and it seems boat owners house is next to the boat. We ordered for toddy (local malayali booze). It was ok ok. At 7:00 PM they fried those fishes and gave to us. At 8:30 PM thet served dinner. We sat on the deck and went to sleep at 2:00 AM. They kept the AC running, so room was nice and cozy.
Next day 30-Sep-2012, I got up at 8:00 AM and took bath. When I went to deck, I saw all others were already there. At 9:00 AM, we were served breakfast. Its idly, sambar and coffee.
At 10:00 AM, they started the boat and we went all around. At 12 o'clock, we came back to same place where we started. There we saw our boat owner was waiting there. The boat house experience was awesome. This was the first travel experience, where I did nothing other that relaxing, eating and talking.
Anyway we came to auto stand and took an auto to drop us in Oliviya for Rs. 35. we waited there for an hour, but the shop was closed. So Nikhil told us to go walking to nearby Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum and we will take an auto to bus stand to find a clock room and from there he will come to the museum.
The museum was a private property and entry charge is Rs. 100 per person. There are 2 persons who will take visitors in group as a guide. No photography allowed inside. I can't imagine how on earth a person can buy so many costly items from around the world and keep it in museum. One person rightly asked "Is it Revi Karuna Karan goes only to souvenir shops when visiting any places and nowhere else?". You get to see gold, silver, ivory and any kind of precious gems in bulk.
Anyway we came out of the place after burning our eyes and took an auto to go the beach. Our intention was not to sit in the beach because it was very very hot, but rather sit in a restaurant nearby and eat some sea food and get cooled by sea breeze. We got down near Coffee House and paid him Rs. 25. Don't go with the name. It sells chicken, mutton and everything except fish. So it did not meet our criteria, we went asking people where we can find a restaurant. There we are after walking for a km in that hot sun, we went to a restaurant, We ordered, 2 chicken biryani, prawn masala, 2 fish fry, 1 meal and beef fry. It was nice lunch and came out of the place at 2:30 PM.
We went straight to the beach and sat under a tree till 4:00 PM. Then we went to a nearby shop and ordered for 2 lime soda and 2 sarja (layered ice cream with fruits and nuts).
At 5:30 PM, we took another auto and back to main junction. There were 2 big shops for kerala chips. We got 1.5 kg of fresh banana and jackfruit chips for each person from Malabar Chips. We came back to Oliviya which was hardly 0.5 km away. Runai and Nikhil waited there and Akshata and Me went to get water and medicine for Nikhil. You won't belive, since it was Sunday evening, not a single shop was open. We went all around for 1/2 hour and found a medicine shop. We came back to Oliviya and at 6:50 our bus came to take us back in Bangalore.
We reached Bangalore 01-Oct-2012 at 6:30 PM and as usual it was Monday.
